Estonian materials start-up Gelatex Technologies has received the 2019 Green Alley Award. The company’s gelatine-based eco-friendly textile alternative to leather beat competition from five other start-ups in the circular economy during a live-pitch event in October in Berlin, Germany.
The jury was particularly impressed with the high level of innovation of Gelatex Technologies’ product.
The environmentally friendly nanofibrous nonwoven material is made from gelatine derived from low-value waste from the meat and leather industries.
The technology is said to be energy efficient, eco-friendly, easily scalable and cheaper than alternative technologies.
