Better Cotton launches incentive programme in Uzbekistan

better cotton initiativeThe Better Cotton Initiative has launched a new programme in Uzbekistan as it looks to further promote the environmental and social benefits of sustainable agricultural practices.

Last year, Uzbekistan – the world’s sixth largest cotton producer – was praised for eliminating long-standing systemic child and forced labour issues from its cotton industry by the International Labour Organization.

Better Cotton believes commercial incentives can help ensure that the newly privatised cotton sector continues to reform and meet international standards.

The newly launched Better Cotton programme has the potential to provide that incentive by linking cotton farmers to international markets and supporting them to continuously improve their practices, said the non-profit, multi-stakeholder governance group.
