China’s airbag fabric market set to expand

Affected by technology, certification and supply chain relationship, there are higher barriers to entry for new manufacturers of airbag fabric, according to Global and China Automotive Airbag Fabric Industry Report 2014, a new market research publication from ResearchInChina.

Globally, the supply of airbag fabric is monopolised by the manufacturers from Japan, Europe and North America. Similarly, the supply of airbag yarn is also in a state of oligopoly, basically controlled by US-based Invista, Germany-based PHP Fibers, Japan-based Toray Industries and several other companies.

Benefiting from a burgeoning automobile market in China, demand for airbags is increasing rapidly, with domestic demand for airbag fabric reaching 28.9m metres in 2013.
