The European Commission (EC) has announced fines for car parts makers Autoliv and TRW (now acquired by ZF Friedrichshafen) for a cartel in the supply of airbags, seatbelts and steering wheels to the Volkswagen and BMW groups.

Autoliv and TRW were fined €179m and €189m, respectively. Both co-operated with the investigation, the EC said.

Japanese safety equipment maker Takata (now acquired by Joyson Safety Systems) avoided a €195m fine for the same offence by revealing the existence of the collusion.
