Innovative fibres and textiles in automotive interiors

The automotive industry is the biggest user of technical textiles, about 20 kg of textiles in each of the 65m cars produced worldwide in 2012. By 2020, 35 kg of textiles per vehicle is predicted to be used.

Seat covers represent 17% by mass of textiles in the car, carpets 23%, glass fibre components 30% and miscellaneous (headliners, tyres, etc.) 30%, according to Tristan Tiedt of the Institut für Textiltechnik, RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

Speaking at the recent Innovative Fibres & Textiles in Automotive Interiors conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, Tiedt noted that there are many applications of textiles in modern cars.
