Reducing transport weight without compromise

The recent Transportation Weight Loss Diet conference held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, brought together designers, engineers, programme leaders and heads of industry from the global aerospace, automotive and rail industries. The two-day event was dedicated to cutting-edge research and technologies aimed at reducing weight without compromising safety, efficiency or performance.

US flooring manufacturer InterfaceFlor developed the first 100% nylon carpet tile for aviation. This was encouraged and guided by Boeing, with the first tile prototype launched in 2009. At the 2009 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, it received the Crystal Cabin Award for Greener Cabin Health and Safety as the carpet can be recycled and does not require edge finishing to prevent fraying.
