Ultrafine gel spun fibres offer potential for composites

MIT-Strong-Nanofibers-010

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a process that can produce ultrafine fibres, which are exceptionally strong and tough.

These fibres, which should be inexpensive and easy to produce, could be a low-cost alternative to carbon, ceramics and other high-performance fibres in applications such as protective armour and nanocomposites.
