Volvo has announced a target of using at least 25% recycled plastic in all new vehicles it produces by 2025.

The Swedish automaker hopes the move will encourage other car manufacturers to incorporate more recycled materials in their components

The company also hopes it will drive cross-industry change, encouraging competitors to develop more circular next-generation components through design that incorporates repurposed waste streams.

To demonstrate the viability of its new aim, the company unveiled a version of its XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid sport-utility vehicle (pictured) that looks identical to the existing model, but has had several of its plastic components replaced with equivalents containing recycled content.
