Study reveals poverty wages in clothing sector

Labour rights campaigners have revealed that poverty wages exist in the heart of Europe, with some apparel workers in Romania earning just 14% of a living wage, forcing family members to search for precarious jobs in Western Europe.

A new country report for Romania from Clean Clothes Campaign includes research over the past six years, with a special focus on 2017-2018.

According to the study, Romania’s fashion industry comprises around 9,000 clothing and footwear factories and 400,000 employees, making this the biggest workforce in this sector in Europe, with the main export destinations being Italy, the UK, Spain, France, Germany and Belgium.
