Five suppliers of automotive occupant safety systems – Tokai Rika, Takata, Autoliv, Toyoda Gosei and Marutaka – have been given fines totalling €34m for breaching EU anti-trust rules relating to price fixing in the sector.

The decision by the European Commission (EC) follows a six-year long investigation of anti-competitive behaviour among suppliers of occupant safety systems in the EU, which began with dawn raids in June 2011.

According to the Commission, these suppliers took part in one or more of four cartels formed to supply seatbelts, airbags and steering wheels to Japanese automakers in the European Economic Area.

The EC said all five suppliers acknowledged their involvement in the cartels and agreed to settle the case.
