Explosion-resistant textiles for aviation safety

Thirteen EU research institutes are developing explosion-resistant textiles for aviation safety, in a project co-ordinated by D’Appolonia of Italy and motivated by the PanAm explosion over Lockerbie in 1988.

In the Fly-Bag2 project, three uncoated fabrics were developed for bomb-proof cargo protection based on Innegra, Vectran and Twaron, and each subjected to the Martindale abrasion test under a pressure of 12 kPA for 50,000 rubs.
