The International Conference on Textile Coating and Laminating held last month in Cannes, France, with more than 100 participants, presented a range of new, sustainable and improved finishing techniques suitable for transport textiles.

Bill Smith of Industrial Textile Associates, USA, who was chairman of the conference organised by International Newsletters, said around 30% of all fibres consumed globally are used for technical textiles, representing 25m tonnes of fabric with a value of US$120bn and annual growth predicted at 3.2-3.8%. The largest segments are transportation (1,183m m2), protective clothing (527m m2), construction, healthcare and furniture.

Thomas Michaelis of Bayer MaterialScience, Germany, said that N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) is a toxic solvent presently used in the manufacture of polyurethane (PU).
