The main themes of the recent Innovative Aircraft Seating 2013 Conference held in Hamburg, Germany, organised by IQPC were: aircraft seating comfort, inflight entertainment (IFE) integration solutions, tablet technology and weight savings.
Until recently, new developments in comfort for economy passengers have been rare. Tom Pleasant, editor of Aircraft Cabin Management, described the development of the Chameleon, which is a long-haul economy seat with an extendable system deployable in front of the seat pan using headrests for converting a row of seats.
A row of three seats can be converted by the flight attendant within 25 seconds and within 30 seconds for a row of four seats. This differs from other extendable seat systems, such as Air New Zealand’s Skycouch. The increase in weight of the seat with this novel system is minimal, consisting mainly of the fixing points on the backrest/seat pan.
