Novel flame-retardant transportation fibres featured at Dornbirn congress

Several presentations at September’s Man-Made Fibers Congress in Dornbirn, Austria, highlighted new flame-retardant (FR) fibre developments that indicate recent trends in this area.

Inherently FR fibres, in which the FR compound is introduced prior to or during spinning of the fibre, are replacing topical treatments that can affect handle and durability.

Brominated compounds, particularly the very cost and FR-effective DecaBDE, the commercial availability of which will be discontinued in the US by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the end of 2013 ion ecological grounds, has resulted in its replacement by organophosphorus-based FRs.
