Using finer airbag yarns to save space

Asahi Kasei of Japan is developing airbags using finer yarns to save space, according to Yusuke Sato of the company’s Leona Filament Division.

Speaking at the 55th Dornbirn Man-Made Fibers Congress held in September in Dornbirn, Austria, he noted that driver and passenger airbags are now installed in virtually all cars in Japan, the US and Europe.

Asahi Kasei’s Leona polyamide 66 fibre features high tensile strength, high abrasion resistance, low fluff and strong adherence to rubber, with uses including airbags, tyre cords and timing belts, as well as other industrial applications.
