World’s first D-shape side curtain airbag

Automotive safety systems supplier Takata has commercialised the world’s first D-shape curtain airbag with a hollow beam design.

In an inflated state, the airbag is shaped like the letter “D”. Compared with conventional curtain airbags, this design is said to enable the thickness of the airbag to be efficiently increased, and as a result, a greater degree of passenger head protection can be achieved.

The curtain airbag is installed along the vehicle’s roofline, above the side windows. In the event of a side impact, the airbag inflates across both side windows from the front seat to the back seat, protecting the heads of passengers.
