Declining clothing sector employment in Cambodia despite rising exports

The sixth edition of the International Labour Organization’s Cambodian Garment and Footwear Sector Bulletin points out that while exports continued to grow at a solid pace in 2016, rising by 7.2% to US$7.3bn, the number of exporting factories officially registered in the sector fell by 10.4% and the number of workers declined by 2.9% in 2016, compared with 2015.

The latest bulletin identified three main factors that may have contributed to the divergence between strong exports and weaker employment and enterprise creation.
