Organised by IQPC, Innovative Seating 2014 took place recently in Düsseldorf, Germany, with an emphasis on the latest technical innovations to reduce weight and enhance comfort.

Dr Christian Mergl of Brose Fahrzeugteile, Germany, described the various parameters that affect seat comfort, such as posture, microclimate, pressure distribution and thermophysiological comfort. Because of the influence of these numerous and different parameters, comfort and discomfort can take place at the same time.

To enhance microclimate comfort, textile seat covers are preferable; leather seat covers require many modifications, such as perforation and internal ventilation, to achieve the same degree of comfort.

During the conference, several speakers mentioned that foam was gradually being replaced by textile alternatives to reduce weight.
