Malaysian clothing makers report losses as Covid-19 shuts operations

20191014161117 webbbanerThe Federation of Malaysian Fashion, Textiles and Apparel said the industry had incurred an estimated MYR163m (US$39m) loss a day in 2020 as operations were shut owing to coronavirus (Covid-19) driven movement restrictions to curb the pandemic, which cut the sector’s 2020 export value to MYR21bn (US$51.bn) from MYR27bn (US$6.5bn) a year earlier.

The federation said the industry is now appealing to the government to move the industry from phase one to phase two of the National Recovery Plan to enable the sector to resume operations and ensure its survival.
