Philippine senator wants Catanduanes to be ‘abaca capital’

Philippine Senator Cynthia Villar has asked her colleagues in the Senate to rally behind her proposed bill, making Catanduanes in the Bicol Region the “Abaca Capital of the Philippines”.

Villar, chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, noted that Catanduanes Province is the largest abaca producing region in the country with 31.7% of total output in 2020, compared with 33.7% in 2019 and 34.4% in 2018.
