Tajikistan plans to increase textile production this year as the country was able to over-fulfil a plan for the harvesting of cotton in 2017.

Last year the volume of cotton production in Tajikistan exceeded the government’s initial plans by 10.1% and it is hoped that growth will continue this year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 500,000 tonnes of raw cotton was harvested in Tajikistan last year, a rise of 128,000 tonnes over 2016. The major cotton producing regions are the Khatlon and Sughdy areas.

2017 was also a record year for cotton processing: more than 30,000 tonnes of cotton fibre were processed in Tajikistan, the highest figure in the past 13 years.
