The 8th European Coating Congress, organised by the University College Ghent, Belgium, took place in September with 250 participants. The emphasis was on novel and modified environmentally sustainable coating techniques applicable also to transport textiles, such as upholstery, interior coverings and floorcoverings for car, rail and aircraft interiors.

Prof. Marc Van Parys of Unitex, Belgium, examined the possibility of turning major wet coating processes into dry and energy efficient processes. This will require a change from solvent and water-based systems to those based on powder and hot melt, utilising hot melt, plasma technology, UV coating and digital finishing/coating technologies.

However, the weakness of digital finishing technology is that it is an unknown technology with no commercial functional inkjets available.
