An interdisciplinary team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and elsewhere have developed a low-cost fibre that contracts in response to an increase in temperature then self-reverses when the temperature decreases.
The programmable, actuating fibre, called FibeRobo, could be used in adaptive performance wear or compression garments. The fibre changes shape in response to changes in temperature without any embedded sensors or other hard components.
